John Deere's challenge

John Deere, a world leader in agricultural machinery manufacturing, had a problem with its sales training: traditional courses lacked engagement and applicability. And when training doesn't engage people and doesn't get applied, it hurts where it matters most: the sales team's productivity and motivation.

On top of that, the training had to reach sales profiles in 9 countries. It needed to be something the teams wanted to complete and that showed up afterwards in their day-to-day work.

  • Lack of engagement with traditional training
  • Little of what was learned got applied day to day
  • Sales team productivity and motivation were suffering
  • Reach sales profiles in 9 countries

The solution

John Deere rolled out a comprehensive training strategy with Game Strategies, a specialist in corporate video games. At its core were strategically selected learning paths in video game format, designed specifically for sales profiles.

The game didn't stay on the screen. After each course, meetings were held to encourage interaction and reinforce what had been learned, and interactive mini-games were played during the training sessions themselves so people could put their knowledge into practice quickly and effectively. Game Strategies worked closely with John Deere throughout the rollout to make sure the strategy delivered.

The results

The results tackle the original problems head-on. Applicability reached 97.6%, and 71.1% of learners applied what they learned in their jobs. Team motivation rose 44.7%, productivity 15.8% and sales 2.6%. The NPS came in at 30, 55 points above average.

And there's an achievement no percentage can capture: Game Strategies games are an official part of John Deere's sales certification. They've gone from being one more course to being part of the path to getting certified in sales.
