LG Electronics's challenge

LG Electronics is one of the world's largest consumer electronics groups: more than 84,000 employees, headquarters in Seoul and 75 subsidiaries. One of them, LG Spain, set itself an ambitious goal: to increase employee commitment through innovation, using training as the main lever.

To work, training had to start from employees' real needs and professional concerns, have a direct impact on their jobs and on how they deal with customers, let each person learn on their own terms and bring LG's innovative spirit into learning, right in the middle of the digital revolution.

  • Improve workforce engagement through innovation in training
  • Address employees' real needs
  • Design training with a real impact on the organization

The solution

LG Spain bet on video games as its learning tool and brought in Game Strategies' game-based learning platform, focused on soft skills training. Each skill becomes a set of techniques, strategies and tools designed to be applied on the job, and is practiced in a safe environment, away from day-to-day pressure.

The serious games live on an online, multi-device platform, so each participant decides when and where to learn. One of them, Triskelion, left its mark on the Management Team itself. Because management, including the Presidency of LG Spain, didn't just back the program: they took the training themselves.

In their own words

Business meetings led by LG’s Management Team have incorporated various elements drawn from the experience with Triskelion in order to improve the effectiveness of their meetings: time and agenda management, task definition or decision-making are some of the best examples.

Innovation is part of our DNA and we are always looking for ways to bring this innovation to the entire organization, including, of course, the training and development department.

The results

LG measured the program across the four levels of the Kirkpatrick model. On reaction, satisfaction reached 9.8 out of 10; on learning, 90% completed the training; on behavior, 97% of the 240 participants say they apply what they learned at work.

And on results, which is what counts: engagement grew 18.64%, according to internal climate (LG Way Survey) and Great Place to Work surveys, and productivity, measured as sales over labor cost between 2013 and 2014, rose 12.61%. It also changed habits: Management Team meetings adopted ideas from Triskelion to manage time, agendas, tasks and decisions.
